Sunil Mudavat - A Tale of Incredible Turn Arounds

June, 2021.

14 year old Sunil Mudavat hails from Rampurthanda village, in the Dharul mandal of Vikarabad District of Telangana.

His mother, M. Budda Bai works in farms as labour, a profession their family has held for generations.

Sunil was inspired by his cousin Vamshi, a Yacht Club of Hyderabad member, who was accepted by the Navy. He moved to Hyderabad in the year 2014 in second grade and studied at Government High School Mudfort, Secunderabad. He stayed at the TTWR Hostel, Bowenpally, from where he first joined YCH in 2016.

Sunil's father passed away in 2008 when Sunil, the youngest of four kids, wasn't even a year old. He was an alcoholic, who abused his wife and left the burden of taking care of their four kids on her. Her sons Sunil and Anil today credit her for the incredible hard work she put in for her kids. She in turn thanks the Yacht Club of Hyderabad, and founder and coach, Suheim Sheikh, for providing her son with the resources and training for a secure future. Sunil qualified for the Navy this year, and will join a whole fleet of sailors from the Yacht Club at the Navy school in Goa.

Sunil acknowledges the wholesome development he has undergone since he joined the Club, thanks to the training, diet and fitness monitoring, as well as supplementary education and classes to aid his studies. He says the club has given him confidence and the conviction to stand on his own and one day support his family. "Suheim sir has looked after me like his own son. That support has given me the strength to work hard and give back to the club and this sport by doing my best at winning competitions," Sunil shares.

Sunil's story is a trail of inspiration. In the five years since Vamshi joined, three other kids have joined the armed forces from the village of Rampurthanda. While he followed his cousin Vamshi to the club, other boys in his village, Karthik and Ramdas, who were inspired by Sunil also joined the club and are trying to qualify for the Armed forces. Sunil's older brother Anil says that there are many more young boys eager to come to Hyderabad, put in the hard hours at the Yacht Club, and allow it to secure their future with the Armed Forces.

Sunil wishes to serve well in the Navy, earn more medals for the country, and one day become a coach like Suheim himself, inspiring and training another generation of skilled sailors.
